Virginia Tinting Laws

Many people tint their car windows for a variety of reasons – privacy, better interior temperature regulation, reduced glare, and/or aesthetics. However, some states consider window tinting to be a safety issue, and set guidelines for how much tint is allowed on windows, if any at all. In Virginia, there are standards for how much each window can be tinted, and how reflective the tint can be. VA tint laws vary depending on your type of vehicle and the windows that will be tinted. Below are the Virginia tint laws, according to Tintinglaws.com

Tint Regulations for SUVs and Vans:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed above manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
  • Rear window: This window can have any level of darkness.
  • Front side windows: These windows must allow over 50% of light into the car and the tint must not be more than 20% reflective.
  • Back side windows: This window can have any level of darkness but the tint must not be more than 20% reflective.

Tint Regulations for Sedans:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed above manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
  • Rear window: This window must allow over 35% of light into the car.
  • Front side windows: These windows must allow over 50% of light into the car and the tint must not be more than 20% reflective.
  • Back side windows: These windows must allow over 35% of light into the car and the tint must not be more than 20% reflective.

Other Tint Regulations:

  • Dual side mirrors are required for any vehicle with a tinted rear window.
  • Tints cannot be red, yellow, and amber in color.
  • Film manufacturers do not need to certify the film they sell in this state.
  • Back side windows: These windows must allow over 35% of light into the car and the tint must not be more than 20% reflective.

If you want to tint your vehicle’s windows, remember to always double check these laws with your local DMV to ensure you receive the most up-to-date, accurate information.
